Management for Makhonjwa Mountains discussed

The MEC of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Prince Vusumuzi Mkhatshwa, met with stakeholders of the Barberton tourism sector on April 13.

Community members and those involved in the Makhonjwa Mountains had a chance to engage with the new MEC, who has only been in the position since the beginning of March.

The discussion centred on the appointment of a management authority for the Makhonjwa Mountains, the only World Heritage Site in Mpumalanga.

“He met with all the stakeholders in the World Heritage Site to hear ideas and concerns about the new management,” said Linda Grimbeek, the COO of the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism.

“The site is important as it has the potential to increase the number of tourists into the province,” said Dr Mohau Ramodibe, director of communication for the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

The MEC has yet to announce which entity he has appointed as the management authority for the site.
