World Wildlife Day 2021

This year’s World Wildlife Day, today, will be celebrated under the theme “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet” and will take place in the form of a virtual event.

The United Nations (UN) said on its website the day will this year “celebrate forest-based livelihoods and seek to promote forest and forest wildlife management models and practices that accommodate both human well-being and the long-term conservation of forests, forest-dwelling species of wild fauna and flora and the ecosystems they sustain.

It will also promote the value of traditional practices and knowledge that contribute to establishing a more sustainable relationship with these crucial natural systems”.

The organisation said this theme is a way to highlight the central role of forests, forest species and ecosystems services in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, and particularly of indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.

This aligns with some of the UN’s sustainable development goals and its wide-ranging commitments to alleviate poverty and to ensure the sustainable use of resources.

Another mark made on this day is an initiative by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). The organisation decided to remove the iconic panda from its logo to symbolise the loss of nature worldwide.

“Today nature has disappeared from the logos of the world’s biggest brands. Here’s why: A #WorldWithoutNature is a world that is incomplete,” the organisation announced on its Facebook page today.
