Toll gate operator is in court for credit card fraud

A Machado Plaza toll gate operator accused of fraudulently using a credit card at the toll to let vehicles pass through while pocketing the money herself, will appear in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on March 10.

The 30-year-old toll booth operator, a resident of Waterval Boven, was arrested by the Middelburg  Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in late December and made her first appearance in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on December 22.

Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, said the woman is suspected to have colluded with someone in securing the credit card, however, no other arrests have been made as yet.

Sekgotodi said the woman swiped the card whenever a motorist would make a cash payment and pocket the cash for herself.

“She did not honour the monthly payment for the credit card and the allocated credit got depleted,” said Sekgotodi.

“The bank sent notices to the company for non-payment of the credit card used at the toll gate.

“An internal investigation was initiated and it was established the credit card was used by the suspect and prejudiced the company by more than hundreds of thousands of rand.”

She said during the investigation it was established that there was a co-accused in this matter, who is allegedly an employee of a government institution.

Sekgotodi said the matter is still under investigation.
