October is fire prevention month

Every year, October brings with it a very important and critical consideration: fire prevention. October is National Fire Prevention Month. 

The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public to take precautions to prevent potentially harmful fires, and be educated about surviving them. It is a proactive method of reducing emergencies and the damage caused by them.

This year’s campaign recognizes the everyday people who motivate their households to develop and practice a home fire escape plan; these seemingly basic behaviors can have life-saving impact.

Some fire prevention tips:

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
  2. Test smoke alarms every month.
  3. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.
  4. If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP.
  5. Consider escape ladders if your residence has more than one level.
  6. Never use flammable liquids indoors.
  7. Never smoke near flammable liquids.
  8. Be careful when using heating sources and cooking burners.

  • Pop upstairs to retrieve heirlooms, passports and pets. …
  • Open doors that have smoke billowing from the joints. …
  • Throw water on a chip pan fire. …
  • Try and escape using a Lift. …
  • Jump from an upstairs window. …
  • Hide in a cupboard or under the bed. …
  • Smoke cigarettes in bed.
