South African roots inspire the Rebel Gardener

Kluge's garden at the Cape Town Flower Show is bound to another breathtaking display, and is just one more feather in this talented landscape architect's cap.

Although he is making great strides as an international landscape architect, the Lowveld’s Leon Kluge has not forgotten his South African roots.

Yet another one of his masterpieces will soon be displayed at the Cape Town Flower Show from October 27 to 30. Sponsoring his garden at the show will be South African Mint, and Kluge has included an innovative theme to reflect its participation.

Along with business partner, Bayley Luutomes, Kluge recently won gold for the best outdoor lighting display at the Singapore Garden Festival. He has also earned three gold medals at the Chelsea International Flower Show in London from 2010 to 2013; gold at the Singapore International Garden Show in 2016; best in show home garden at the Gardening World Cup in Japan in 2013; a show garden of special recognition at the Chaumont Garden and land art show in France, as well as silver at the Japan Garden Show in 2011 and 2012.

The theme for Kluge’s garden at the Cape Town Flower Show will be “origami”. The water sculptures will be based on bulrush that grows in the ponds and streams around Cape Town, which will be made from SA Mint coins.

The new sterling silver coins that depict the Hermanus cliff gladiolus and the blue Disa in colour, which will be launched by SA Mint at the show, will be one of the main attractions of Kluge’s garden. Surrounding the bullrush will be ponds which will include a “wishing well”theme.
