Plane hits vehicles during emergency landing

The reason for the emergency landing hasn't been established.

MALALANE – More details on the emergency landing executed by a small aircraft on the N4 yesterday have emerged.

The pilot, Mr Jamie Chance of Tonetti Farm on the road to Low’s Creek, undertook a routine flight when the aircraft suddenly experienced an engine failure.

According to Mr Pieter du Plooy, a paramedic of Securicon Lowveld, Chance purchased the plane about four months ago. “The aircraft was serviced by Mercy Air in Gauteng about three weeks ago and he flew it back to Low’s Creek without any hassles. Last week, he also undertook a flight to Hoedspruit without any problems,” du Plooy said.

He flew in the area yesterday afternoon when the aircraft suddenly experienced a loss of power. Chance then performed an emergency landing on the N4, about two kilometres from the Nkomazi Toll Plaza.

Two other vehicles were hit in the process.

Spokesman  for community safety, security and liaison, Mr Joseph Mabuza, said neither occupants in both vehicles nor Chance sustained any injuries.

Spokesman for Trac N4, Ms Solange Soares, said traffic flow on the N4 was affected by the accident, but everything was back to normal.
“One lane was closed as a result but was later opened at about 18:00,” she said.
