Mpumalanga SAPS seize hand grenades and ammunition during Operation Vala Umgodi

The police conducted the Operation Vala Umgodi in Dientjie due to some suspected illegal mining activities in the area.

The Mpumalanga SAPS, led by the Ehlanzeni District police commissioner, Major General Dorah Xaba, conducted another Operation Vala Umgodi in Dientjie outside Graskop on Friday, September 20.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of various items, including two F1 hand grenades and dozens of live rounds of ammunition.

According to a Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the SAPS conducted the operation in Dientjie due to the suspected illegal mining activities taking place there. “The alleged illegal miners fled the area leaving behind the hand grenades, as well as a large amount of ammunition. An enquiry has since been opened in relation to this discovery.”

He concluded: “This is very much a concerning situation as military items were found to be used by the suspected illegal miners. The police are intensifying efforts as we can never allow a situation of lawlessness to continue unabated in the province. The SAPS will continue with similar operations until there are no illegal miners.”
