Police recover vehicle after hot pursuit

A hunt for a stolen vehicle occurred over the weekend after police spotted it parked at a local hotel.

MBOMBELA – The pursuit of a suspect in a stolen vehicle only ended after 60 kilometres on Sunday.

According to the police flying squad’s Capt Piet Smit, the incident occurred at 08:00.

“Const Hannes Blom was on duty on Saturday night. He spotted a white Toyota Hilux which had been reported stolen in Matsulu, parked outside the Formula One hotel,” he said.

“Blom realised they would have to wait for the suspect to book out of the hotel and his marked vehicle would be noticed. He had received information that the suspect was on his way to Gauteng,” said Smit.

Blom requested the assistance of Tracker to help monitor the vehicle.

“The suspect was followed to the R40.”

Bossies Community Justice’s Mr Albert Gryvenstein said Blom asked him for backup.

He said they had a lot of distance to cover to catch up to the vehicle.

“The suspect was travelling at a fast speed. Even though he wasn’t aware of us behind him, we had difficulty catching up to him,” Gryvenstein said.

According to Gryvenstein they eventually caught up to the vehicle near Hazyview.

“We cut him off at the T-junction as you enter the town,” he added.

He said the driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested.

Gryvenstein said the arrest and retrieval of the vehicle were combined efforts by the police’s flying squad and Tracker’s Mr Piet Kruger.
