UPDATE: MEC saddened by loss of eight lives in bus and truck accident on R555

The road remains closed. The Limpopo Forensic Department’s pathologists have arrived at the scene. The MEC sent her condolences to the victims' families and reiterated the call for safe driving and obeying the rules of the road.

The Limpopo MEC for transport and community safety, Florence Radzilani, said she is saddened by the loss of eight lives due to an accident between a Nnyana Shakwana bus and an SB Trading truck.

The accident occurred on the R555 between Lavino and Tubatse Residence in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality at about 07:20 today, April 18.

The bus was carrying miners from Mototolo Mine, while the truck was being driven towards Kutullo with commuters on the back.

SAPS members said when these two vehicles collided, the passengers on the back fell off, some being injured and others killed.

“According to reports, the cause of the fatality is a bus that was overtaking unsafely and that sideswiped with a truck,” said Tidimalo Chuene, the Limpopo Department of Transport’s spokesperson.

The deceased were all passengers on the back of the truck who were going to work at a brick manufacturing company nearby.

Two more people sustained serious injuries, while six others suffered minor ones. They were all rushed to the nearby hospital.

Radzilani has sent messages of condolences to the victims’ families. She made a clarion call to motorists to drive with caution and observe traffic rules at all times.

At the time of publishing, the R555 remained closed, but the Limpopo Forensic Department’s pathologists were on the scene.
