Man found near Schagen dies of severe injuries, police investigate

A man sustained critical injuries, reportedly as the result of an assault, and was left at the roadside near Schagen on Good Friday. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

A man died after he was found reportedly severely assaulted and left for dead off a side road near the N4 last Friday evening, March 29.

ER24 Lowveld’s regional manager, Greg Wilcox, said they had arrived at the scene at 22:05 and found a man, thought to be about 35, in a critical condition with multiple wounds that suggested he had been severely assaulted.

Wilcox said the man had severe chest trauma, some fractured ribs and head injuries. He said the man was rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital for further treatment.

A provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the man later succumbed to his injuries, and that the Nelspruit police are investigating an inquest case.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and at this stage, the police cannot rule out the possibility of foul play.”

Mdhluli said the possibility of a case of murder being probed cannot be ruled out. He said the deceased has not yet been identified, and members of the public who might have lost a family member are urged to contact the Nelspruit SAPS’s detective services.
