WATCH: Footage provides context to R537 truck accident in December

Lowvelder previously reported that the truck driver had to be extracted from the wreck with the Jaws of Life.

Video footage depicting events preceding the crash of an XM Timber truck on December 9, indicates that a third party might have caused the accident by overtaking on a solid line and sideswiping the timber truck.

At the time, Lowvelder reported that the driver of an articulated truck had escaped death after the truck he was driving crashed on the R537 near the Witklip Dam turn-off.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the accident. Initial comments were that the driver of an articulated truck had lost control on a bend, left the road and rolled down an embankment.

“The driver was found trapped in the wreckage and was extricated using hydraulic rescue equipment before he was stabilised and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care,” Emer-G-Med had said at the time, confirming that the road was opened again for traffic soon after.

At the time, the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said they were aware of the accident and were calling on motorists to drive with caution.

The truck company has since contacted Lowvelder with the above footage, which warrants further investigation into the cause of the accident. This is a developing story and the paper will inform its readers as soon as more information becomes available.
