WATCH: Brazen robbers hit White River jewellery store

A video circulating on social media shows four men, some armed with crowbars and one armed with a gun, rob a jewellery store at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre in broad daylight.

In what can only be described as a brazen act, four men, some armed with crowbars and one with a gun, robbed Roy Sarkin Jewellers at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre just after 10:00 this morning, November 16.

According to the owner, Roy Sarkin, this was the second time this year the store had been robbed, the first being on July 22. He said he had just stepped out to get a cup of coffee. He said his wife was still inside and that he had locked both the door and gate behind him when he left.

CCTV footage of the incident shows three men with shopping bags, some armed with crowbars and one holding a gun, kicking open the door and entering the shop, after they had seemingly pried open the gate with the crowbars. The fourth remained at the door outside.

The video only lasts 12 seconds.

Sarkin said his wife was luckily not harmed in the incident and that he had opened a police case. He added that the CCTV cameras had been installed after the first robbery. He said the men told his wife this morning that they would be back.

Sarkin said he had not yet calculated the total value of the items stolen, and added that the robbers had gotten away with more items in the first robbery.

“During the first robbery, the suspects told us they didn’t want to hurt us as we were their customers, and that they would be back to rob us again,” said Sarkin.

Casterbridge’s Louis van der Merwe said the whole incident was ‘so brazen’, but that they were grateful they had caught clear footage of the suspects on the CCTV footage.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said a case of business robbery was being investigated.
