Two killed and several wounded in shooting near Calcutta

An unknown number of suspects opened fire on people in Alexandra near Calcutta. Two people were killed.

Two men were murdered and seven others wounded when an unknown number of suspects opened fire on a group while they were drinking at a premises in Alexandra near Calcutta on Saturday September 23.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said the incident occurred at about 02:25. He said police and paramedics were called out to the premises where two people were certified dead. The seven wounded victims were rushed to hospital.

“A preliminary investigation indicates that an unidentified number of gunmen opened fire on the victims who sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” he said.

Mohlala said one of the victims was fatally shot inside a car, while the other deceased was found lying on the ground. The seven who were injured were found scattered around the premises. He said the motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

He added that high-calibre firearms could have been used by the suspects during the shooting. Evidence found at the scene included eight empty rifle cartridges, and six empty cartridges for a 9mm pistol.

He said these items were seized and will form part of the probe. He further stated that allegations that the premises was possibly trading in liquor will also be investigated.
