One shot dead and about 15 injured in KaNyamazane

Two armed men wearing balaclavas stormed into a tavern just after midnight and started to shoot at the patrons.

One male was fatally shot and at least 15 were injured in a certain tavern in KaNyamazane, on Sunday morning, September 17.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, one male, not yet identified, was fatally shot and about 15 other patrons sustained some injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

He said there could be more victims as others were rushed for medical treatment soon after the incident, too.

“Two armed men wearing balaclavas stormed into the liquor outlet just after midnight and indiscriminately opened fire. After the shooting, the suspects are said to have fled the scene,” Mdhluli said.

“The police and emergency medical services were summoned to the scene, and upon arrival, a male victim was certified dead. The injured victims are being treated for gunshot wounds.”

He said a case of murder with counts of attempted murder has been opened. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.

“A team of investigators has already been assembled under the leadership of the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela,” said Mdhluli.

He said no one has been arrested as yet. The police urge anyone with information to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the My SAPS app.
