Clivia king Paul Kloeck maintains 1st place at annual flower showcase

The Lowveld Clivia Club recently hosted its 21st clivia show at the Lowveld Botanical Garden.

The Lowveld Clivia Club has bloomed over 21 years of spectacular flowerings of various types of clivias.

The club hosted its 21st Annual Clivia Show at the Lowveld Botanical Garden on September 9 and 10.

Altogether 143 clivias, varying among the six species, with unique colours, interspecific breeds and some without flowers, called foliage, were on display.

Sue and Paul Kloeck of the Lowveld Clivia Club received the award for the best on show and also first runners-up. They were followed by Neethling du Toit as the second runner-up. Paul also received an award for the best interspecific clivia.

Anita Corbett, Judy Pott, Image Makoni and Roger Briggs.

Drikus Vijoen took the best foliage clivia. His plant had the most beautiful and rich leaves.

The one with the most unique flowers belonged to Ian Radmore.

Paul said reaching such a milestone for the club took hard work in growing the plants and continuously attracting locals, young and old, to the club.

Toppies Beukes and Mathilda Burger.

“The first year we started the club was the most exciting. Locals and club members showed enthusiasm to learn how to grow these beautiful plants. It is mostly a hobby much loved by elderly people.”

He said it takes patience to grow an award-winning clivia. “A clivia can grow without flowering for the first few years. Afterwards, it will continue every year for over 40 years, and that is most satisfying,” Paul said.

Sue said the show was a success as many locals attended to enjoy the sight of the captivating plants.
