Mpumalanga flood damages’ repair funds approved

The funds should be transferred to the affected municipalities by June 15.

The provinces affected by the floods at the beginning of the year will at last receive their funds to start with the repairs to all the damages.

The National Treasury has approved the funds needed by these six provinces.

The treasury received funding applications from the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) late in May. These have been assessed and all the projects were verified. The approved funds should be transferred to the affected municipalities by the end of this week.

The treasury has reviewed the funding recommendations made by the NDMC to ensure all the relevant requirements of the Division of the Revenue Act are met.

The provincial spokesperson for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lindiwe Msibi, also confirmed that the funds would be made available and transferred to the concerned provinces and municipalities.

Mpumalanga needs an estimated R2.3b to repair major flood damages across the province. All disaster-damaged infrastructures have been prioritised, with water provision structures topping the list.
