Elderly man sustains minor burns after explosion in vehicle in Mbombela

A man sustained minor burn wounds to his face after a small explosion inside his vehicle while he was parked near a shop in Ferreira Street.

An elderly man was taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital with minor burn wounds to his face after a small explosion occurred while he was inside his vehicle, parked near a shop in Ferreira Street on Wednesday morning May 17.

ER24’s Russel Meiring said it is believed that gas from a leaking cylinder inside the car had ignited when the man lit a cigarette.

ER24 paramedics were called out just after 07:00 and found the man walking around the scene.

He was treated by the paramedics before being transported to the hospital for further medical care.

A provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said local police had not received any reports of the incident.
