Suspects flee empty-handed after botched cash-in-transit heist near Emoyeni Mall

A group of armed gunmen unsuccessfully tried to rob a cash-in-transit van. No one was injured.

A cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was attacked by a group of unknown armed suspects while travelling from Emoyeni Mall to KaBokweni on Monday, March 27.

According to the spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, the suspects had been driving a white Mercedes-Benz sedan, a white Audi and a blue BMW during the incident.

“The Mercedes-Benz rammed the CIT van, but the driver managed to drive to the base in Mbombela. The suspects fired at the van with AK-47 and R5 rifles. The Mercedes-Benz was set alight, and the suspects fled the scene in the other two vehicles. No money was taken and no injuries were sustained,” said Sekgotodi.

She asks anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the attackers to contact Lieutenant Colonel Erhard Stroh on 082 300 8315.
