Schnarr murder case postponed

The two suspects were remanded in custody until their next expected court appearance in the KaBokweni Magistate's Court next week.

The case against the two men who were arrested earlier this month in connection with the murder of German tourist, Jörg Schnarr (66), has been postponed to December 7 for a formal bail application.

Cebo Marshall Mamba (38) and Bongimusa Fortune Lebo Matsane (25) appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court on Monday November 28 and were remanded in custody until their next expected court appearance.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said Mamba and Matsane were arrested between November 16 and 17.

The third suspect in Schnarr’s murder, Joseph Napoleon Nyalunga, was the first to be arrested in connection with the case, on October 12. He appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court earlier in November and was denied bail. His matter was remanded to January 24 for further investigation. He will remain in police custody.

Schnarr was fatally shot in the chest on October 3 while on holiday with his wife, Vera, and their friends, Reiner and Andrea Nichter, en route to Mdluli Safari Lodge near the Kruger National Park’s Numbi Gate.

The tourists were stopped by three armed suspects in a VW Caddy.

The suspects are said to have instructed the tourists to open their vehicle’s doors, but when Schnarr reportedly locked them all, one of the suspects allegedly shot him through the window and hit his upper body. It is alleged that Schnarr reversed their vehicle for about 100m before crashing into Heroes Academy’s wall.

Unfortunately, he died on the scene as a result of the shooting. The suspects reportedly sped off in their vehicle without taking anything from the tourists.
