Lydenburg Primary School learners excel at provincial science expo

During the expo, some promising young scientists were recognised for their scientific expertise.

A total of seven Lydenburg Primary School learners participated in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists at Penryn College, Mbombela, in July.

The learners are currently doing Grade Seven, and each one received a certificate for participation. One learner, Nakai Mateke, will represent the school at the international science fair, which will be held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg from December 9.

At this prestigious event, learners stand a chance to win prizes and bursaries and scholarships.

They may also be selected to showcase their research or innovation at an international science fair in the United States of America, Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa. Mateke said she was excited to demonstrate her abilities among the most promising young scientists in the country.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to represent the school. This will give me an opportunity to network with people from different schools, different provinces and backgrounds. I also look forward to meeting new people, see their projects and learn more, develop contacts and see how I can improve my project.”

The principal, Johnny Ramodike, said the learners conducted most of their own research.

“Learners worked on a variety of topics, including the solution to a twin prime conjecture, also known as Polignac’s Conjecture, the reasons why they struggle with mathematics, the factors that contribute to poor performance in maths, the use of electromagnetic fields, mini solar pumps, why disabled children cannot attend school and the lack of female engineers.”

Ramodike is proud of what the learners have accomplished.

“It is a distinct honour to have someone representing the school at the international science fair. It will motivate other learners to do more. I’m also happy for those who took part in the provincial expo and the research skills they gained.”
