PCA and Department of Health visit the Magalela settlement

Pediatric Care Africa was accompanied by the Department of Health during the outreach in Magalela.

Pediatric Care Africa (PCA) conducted a medical outreach to the Magalela informal settlement on Saturday, April 23. Situated 10 kilometres outside White River on the Hazyview Road, Magalela is home to about 360 people.

PCA’s Dr André Hattingh said the organisation has been serving this community for over four years and this includes regular medical assistance and monthly nutrition drops to a number of children in severe food distress living there.

“This Saturday was special as we had the Department of Health accompanying us on our outreach to administer Covid vaccines to people living at Magalela. Thirty-five willing adults were vaccinated with more sure to follow,” said Hattingh.

“A medical outreach is a very costly and labour-intensive exercise. It is not possible without the assistance and donations from the many people who volunteer their time and expertise and the companies that donated goods to us,” he said.

“To all the doctors, nurses, physios, dieticians and admin volunteers who joined us and who gave up their Saturday to help us and the children we tend to, we cannot possibly thank you enough.”

The Department of Health was also present to give people their Covid vaccines.

Hattingh thanked Van Heerden Pharmacy at Westend in Mbombela. He said the pharmacy donated a few thousand rand’s worth of over-the-counter medication and nappies. He also thanked SPAR DC in Mbombela for the food to feed the kids and their parents.

“Squeeza, we thank you for the cool drinks and we thank Manta Trading for its generous milk donation. We appreciate you. It truly takes a village to raise a child, thank you all,” said Hattingh.
