Comrades advice from an old hand, Bruce Fordyce

This legend gave advice on the Comrades and also endorsed the TRACN4 Elands Marathon set to take place on May 7.

Bruce Fordyce visited the Lowveld on March 31 with some sound advice for novice Comrades runners.

The man is not only a legendary South African athlete (having run the Comrades 30 times; nine of which he won), but a storyteller of note. During his talk at the Lowveld Country Club, he even worked in an April Fool’s joke that had Comrades hopefuls think twice about taking part this year.

Fordyce said an official he knows, Afril Pool (read April Fool), told him the ultramarathon will be held in November; this got quite the reaction from the runners in attendance, but he put them out of their misery soon afterwards.

He continued sharing advice, also to be found is his book, Winged Messenger, and had the audience hanging on his lips. He also shared the emotions involved with running and finishing such a challenging race. He reminded people that they should take in and savour the moment they finish the race and cherish it.

Fordyce was also there to endorse the TRACN4 Elands Marathon (formerly known as the Elands Valley Marathon) set to take place on May 7 – he has run this marathon three times himself, as well.

Following his talk, he spent quite some time chatting to people and signing the copies of his book they had bought.

Bruce Fordyce shares a tale of someone who had lost a shoe at the very beginning of the Comrades.
