A mother, stepfather, their two children and one child’s friend were involved in a head-on collision between Barberton and eManzana on March 18.
Initially, the accident had claimed the lives of the two adults, Lizelle and Jaco van der Merwe. Their children, Rochelle (11) and Markus (19) Bruyns, and Markus’ friend were taken to hospital.
The friend passed away on March 26.

Hoërskool Rob Ferreira shared the devastating news on its Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that we share the sad news with you that Michael Sinden, Grade 12, died on Saturday. Our sincere condolences to his parents, family and friends. You are in our prayers,” said the school.
The Van der Merwes’ memorial service was held in White River on March 26.
A family friend, Bruce Macaulay, said Rochelle was discharged on March 23 and is staying with her ballet teacher for the time being. Her brother was discharged on March 25 and is living with a friend while recovering from his injuries.
