Man drowns while swimming at Lisbon Falls

The incident occurred on New Year’s Day, when the 35-year-old of Graskop was trapped underwater while swimming.

A 35-year-old man of Graskop’s New Year’s celebration ended in tragedy when he drowned in the Lisbon Falls.

According to the Mpumalanga Diving Unit’s Capt Pottie Potgieter, the victim, whose identity is not known at this stage, was celebrating the start of the new year with a group of friends from Johannesburg at the falls. He went for a swim at about 15:00.

The force of the water, however, trapped him underneath the falls, and his friends’ search was in vain.

The diving unit recovered his body on Sunday morning.
