Vandalism and theft leave residents without water

Residents have to stand in long queues for water yet again. For the past 10 days, the water supply has been irregular and water trucks are being dispatched several times a day.

Meanwhile, residents are complaining that they are always the victims when the reservoirs and pump stations are out of order. Reports of this problem were still received by readers on December 20.

A mother, Miriam Mashadi, walks nearly a kilometre everyday to fetch water for her household. “I come here everyday and now even the taps have been stolen. So even if the reservoir had water, I would not be able to access it,” said Mashadi.

The pump station is under construction in Ext 2.

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) has issued an apology and gave details relating to the water shortages.

“There has been a leak in the main pipeline supplying water to the whole township, including Kellysville. The problem intensified after we discovered that the pump station had been vandalised and some engine parts were stolen on Friday December 3. We are doing our utmost to repair the leak and replace the stolen items so that the normal water supply can be restored. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said Themba Sibiya, media and marketing manager of TCLM.

Sibiya urged residents to report cases of theft and vandalism to the SAPS, as these hinder service delivery.
