Kings of Sunday have soul for music

With chilly winter days and the Covid-19 pandemic still rearing its ugly head, the good doctor of music has prescribed doses of four Kings of Sunday Chillas, only to be taken on Sundays.

It does not really matter which one you take first. You can take the legendary Rio Mabunda first, followed by a teaspoon of Uncle Mdu and then DJ Soul, and last but not least DJ S’hlabane. Dr Music guarantees with this mixture, your Sundays will never be the same again.

Whether they are playing at Matsulu Chillas Corner or KaBokweni’s Siya Bar, this foursome proves to be a winning formula to a great Sunday session. For the past two decades, Mabunda has been rocking the airwaves at Ligwalagwala FM as a presenter and later as station manager. He is a perfect example of all great things maturing with time.

Both Mabunda and Uncle Mdu started mixing and playing music as a hobby during their spare time, but this soon developed into something far greater. They are now in demand and get to play at various joints around Mpumalanga. Make no mistake, they both dish up nothing but good, soulful music.

Then there is Ligwalagwala FM’s soul music master, DJ Fannie Nzinisa, aka S’hlabane. He never disappoints. Even though S’hlabane has his own following and audience, whenever he starts playing, even the born-frees and ama 2000s forget about their life sciences homework and start jamming to the classical beats.

DJ Soul came to this game as an underdog, but worked his way up the ladder, outshining many wannabe DJs who think they got game just because they work in the radio industry. Just like the other three, DJ Soul spends most of his time preparing for the next gig and honing his craft.

“This game is all about studying your audience and playing according to their needs. You have to be prepared so that you are not met with hostility. Imagine playing Bryan Adams jams to a younger audience… it would be a disaster,” laughed DJ Soul.
