Pilot dies in aircraft accident near Nelspruit Airport

After reports of a private plane that crashed at the Nelspruit Airport (old airport) yesterday, Netcare 911 has provided more details.

The pilot of the aircraft, André van Heerden of Summerfields Rose Retreat in Hazyview, was the only occupant on board.

According to Netcare 911 media liaison officer, Shawn Herbst, they responded to reports of a plane crash near the Nelspruit Airport at approximately 15:45 on Friday.

“Reports from the scene alleged that a light aircraft piloted by an adult male, the only occupant on board, came down outside the airport.”

The Netcare 911 helicopter emergency medical service crew who were at the airfield when the incident occurred rushed to the scene, but they found the aircraft engulfed in flames.

The Nelspruit Fire and Rescue Services managed to douse the blaze and on closer inspection found the pilot deceased next to the aircraft.
