Millions of rand’s worth of drugs found under car bonnet

The driver was travelling from Mozambique on Monday when the discovery was made.

MBOMBELA – Drugs with a street value of an estimated R3,3 million were discovered yesterday. They were found under the bonnet of a sedan making its way into the province from Mozambique.

According to a statement by police spokesman Col Mtsholi Bhembe, the drugs were found during a joint operation by the police, traffic department, Department of Home Affairs’ custom officials and SARS.

The team searched the inside of the sedan, but when they wanted to search the engine compartment the driver of the vehicle became squeamish.

“The driver said the bonnet was difficult to open and pretended to look for a tool to open it. He disappeared in the process. The teams managed to open the bonnet at which point the staggering discovery was made,”

Bhembe said in the statement.
