UPDATE: Accused in Liesl Nel’s murder makes first court appearance

The much-loved 41-year-old is described as an incredible person by friends.

MBOMBELA – Nicholas Magagula who stands accused of the murder of Liesl Nel appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today.

The case has been postponed to March 6 for a bail application hearing.

According to the investigating officer, Lt Col Erhard Stroh the investigation is ongoing.

MBOMBELA – The man who was arrested in connection with the murder of Liesl Nel on Saturday, did not appear in court on Monday.

According to Capt Dawie Pretorius, SAPS spokesman a post-mortem investigation is currently underway and the 36-year-old suspect is set to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

A memorial service for Nel has been scheduled for Saturday, February 24 in the Lowveld National Botanical Garden.

UPDATE: Murdered Liesl Nel remembered, 15:50 February 18

MBOMBELA – Close family friend, Carmen Botes said that Nel was like a family member.

“She was an incredible person. She believed passionately in kindness to all living beings. She brought out the best in people with her positivity and encouraging nature,” said Botes.

She added that as friends and family they take solace in the fact that they know that Nel made the most of every opportunity in life with her positive light-hearted nature.

Friends of Nel also took it upon themselves to pay tribute to her legacy by posting messages of kindness and condolences to Facebook since news of her death became public on Saturday.

Another close friend of Nel, Jodi Wainstein said, “Liesl Nel, it was such a pleasure getting to know you. Your passion for veganism, animals, the environment and everything good touched those around you. I am beyond shocked and heartbroken. RIP.”

“She was a beautiful soul, with a caring nature. I’m not a Nelspruiter anymore, but remember her well. RIP,” said Fallon Beeslaar.

Thembelihle Zanele Thabethe said, “This broke my mom’s heart… She’s been telling me about how sweet this gorgeous lady was. May her loving soul rest in perfect peace.”

“This is so sad , one of my closest friends in high school years… May her soul RIP,” said Sonia Nunes Pita.

Shirley Mnisi said, “ Oh NOOoooooo! RIP Liesl, I am shuttered and shocked beyond anything imaginable!”

BREAKING NEWS: Suspect arrested in Liesl Nel murder, 20:55 February 17

MBOMBELA – A 36 year old suspect was arrested this late this afternoon.

According to Capt Dawie Pretorius, SAPS spokesman the suspect worked as the gardener at the house Nel was looking after.

“The swift arrest was made by Lt Col Erhard Stroh and his team,” said Pretorius.

He said that the suspect will appear in court on Monday.

BREAKING NEWS: Woman murdered and left in a ditch on Uitkyk Road, 08:52 February 17

MBOMBELA – The body of a 41 year-old woman who is presumed to have been strangled was found this morning.

The incident happened at a house on the eastern side of the Uitkyk Road.  According to police spokesman Capt Dawie Pretorius, the woman had been working for a house sitting company and was looking after the house while the owners were away.

“She was found in a ditch outside, there is a possibility she was strangled, but until the autopsy we cannot confirm this.”

Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit Operations manager Nico Grobler said they received a call from the owner who could not reach her on the phone. ” We went through with the victims brother and we searched the house and could not find her. We found her outside in a ditch.”

Pretorius said detectives and police’s forensic unit were on the scene. “Nothing was stolen from the house.”

Bossies Community Justice Albert Gryvenstein was also on the scene. “This was not a farm attack although it is on a small holding outside town.”

No suspects have been arrested and police are still investigating.
