CANSA’s calendar full of colourful events

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in town has exciting fund-raising events planned for the community this year.

CANSA is a non-profit organisation set-up to fight cancer and offers support to sufferers.

The local association already has a programme which will be fun to everyone, both young and old.

On February 14 it will host a clinic at Fountain Baths Guest House.

According to Christille Strauss, from the local association, the clinic will provide much-needed services to patients. “Various things will be done such as breast examinations, skin analysis, Pap smears – screening tests for early diagnosis of cervical cancer, information on the warning signs for adults and children, and many other services.” From February 27 to March 4 the branch will visit schools and mines for the annual Shavathon.

“The volunteers will contact everyone with more information, with regard to the programme.

“During the schools Shavathon, it will cost R10 per head. We decided on this price when we realised that in one school there is more than one child from one family. For all of them to have the opportunity to support CANSA we had to charge this amount.”

The corporate day for Shavathon will be held on March 3 at Victorian Tea Garden.

“We ask local businesses to support this event and challenge one another.

“During this event we will charge R50 per adult and R25 per child. For us to raise enough funds we need as much support as possible from the public.

We urge them to be part of our fund-raising events.”

Last year CANSA managed to raise the funds it needed during the Shavathon. “We managed to do all that because of the amazing support we received from our community. This is the reason why we need their support in 2017 so that we can do more.”

The CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events which supports a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy. Shaving or spraying one’s head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Source:
