Rapper sets the trend in both fashion and music

Mphethi said where he came from never hindered his progress. "People always told me to quit music, that nobody listened to hip hop in my village but I proved that my music was the best. This is evident with the support I get from my home folk."

BURGERSFORT – When rapper William Innocius Mphethi (20), better known by his stage name Willy Seropana, started rhyming 10 years ago, only a few thought he would make it in the demanding music industry.

Today, he is being hailed as one of the most talented rappers in Tubatse. Seropana, from the deep rural areas of Shakung Village, is optimistic that he will be a force to be reckoned with in Limpopo.

“My album, Love Portion, is a hit all over. It is getting played in taverns and shebeens. I constantly get invitations to perform in neighbouring villages and towns,” he said, and added that he had performed at Botokwa during the Easter holiday.

Mphethi said where he came from never hindered his progress. “People always told me to quit music, that nobody listened to hip hop in my village but I proved that my music was the best. This is evident with the support I get from my home folk.”

He started making music during his days at Maroleng Primary School. “I sang in schools choirs and did anything related to music. It was clear that I was destined for greater heights,” he added.

The young rapper’s role model and icon is award-winning Motswako rapper Khuli Chana. He compared his music to that of Chana as that was where he drew much inspiration.

Music is not the rapper’s only talent. He is also a devoted follower of fashion. “I am currently working with Last King (LK), a brand that designs T-shirts and caps and I now have the luxury of wearing my own brand when I perform.
