Taiwanese visit the Lowveld to learn about rhinos

Care for Wild Africa were thrilled to share their rhino stories with representatives of a Taiwanese theme park.

MBOMBELA – Representatives of a major Taiwanese theme park have visited Care for Wild Africa (CFW) this week to learn about rhino conservation. They will take their new knowledge back home where they will educate others about the importance of conserving the species.

Representatives of the Leofoo Development Company in Taiwan spent the weekend learning about what exactly employees of CFW do to ensure the survival of rhinos. They fed and subsequently fell in love with three of the baby rhinos at the sanctuary.

Veterinarian Dr James Chang and Taiwanese ambassador Mr John Chen gave Ms Petronel Niewoudt a miniature version of the Leofoo Village Theme Park during a formal dinner in Pretoria on Tuesday.

“The Leofoo Village theme park has an African section where they also keep rhinos,” said CFW’s spokesman Ms Marnelle van der Merwe. The Leofoo Village will introduce their new knowledge in educational courses about conservation for learners and students.

On Monday CFW founder Ms Pertonel Niewoudt was a guest of honour at a dinner meeting with the Taiwanese ambassador, Mr John Chen, in Pretoria. Here Chen and representatives of the theme park signed a memorandum, agreeing “to encourage and promote cooperation in the fields of education about rhinos, threats to and conservation of rhinos”.
