Grannies play soccer to get fit

“Winning is our first objective, playing for the price or not,” said a very enthusiastic Philistas Mohlala of the Basadi.

BURGERSFORT – As part of Women’s Month celebrations, grannies from Riba Cross and Motshana villages participated in a friendly soccer match on August 10.

The Basadi reka Kgona (Women can be successful) team locked horns with Bakgekolo Bakgekolo (The Grannies) at the Lehlaba sports ground. Basadi reka Kgona won the match 5-3. The grandmothers donned sport attires and bright hankerchiefs, showcasing their soccer skills in front of a packed crowd.

“Winning is our first objective, playing for the price or not,” said a very enthusiastic Philistas Mohlala of the Basadi.

Some other grannies said they played more for the exercise than the glory. “What I like most about our team is that we run a lot. It is good for everyone to exercise, be healthy and keep their bodies in good shape. I feel like I am 30 years old because of the exercises we do,” said gogo Elizabeth Masuku.

Kgoshi Ryan Komane of Motshana village said he was glad to see the grannies participating in sport. The chief was one of the spectators at the match.

According to the residents of Motshana when the elderly women began kicking a ball around a year ago, they nearly caused car accidents as drivers craned to see them. “People walking by stopped to stare, others gossiped, shocked at seeing the fit gogos,” the residents laughed.
