Caring hearts spread some warmth, block by block

On Friday this initiative drew to a close when almost 2 000 squares were sewed together.

For the last few months businesses, tenants and shoppers at Riverside Mall were hard at work knitting and crocheting squares in support of Nelson Mandela International Day. On Friday this initiative drew to a close when almost 2 000 squares were sewed together.

The previous day all participants gathered at the knitting hub between the Nailbox and Boutique la Pearl to combine the blocks to make beautiful patchwork blankets.

Businesses and willing individuals participated in the Knit-A-Block project hosted by Riverside Mall. About 40 blocks were sewn together to form a blanket. Each was about 15 square centimetres in size.

Riverside’s management, Boutique la Pearl, the Nailbox and The Naked Sheep at Sonpark had been knotting the needles since the beginning of June. Even people who didn’t have the funds to buy wool, could participate as wool was made available at the knitting hub.

Many joined for the distribution on Mandela Day. According to Ria Gouws, exhibitions coordinator at Riverside Mall, the blankets were distributed to the less fortunate to help keep them warm during the winter.
