Complaints about illegal dumping sites fall on deaf ears

Kwinika said they had requested that a "no-dumping" sign should be erected and a big rubbish bin provided, but there was no response

BURGERSFORT – Steelburger/Lydenburg News recently received numerous complaints about illegal dumping sites in and around the villages.

Residents of Praktiseer, Longtill, Riba Cross, Mashamothane and Mabocha villages said they were fed up with the bad odour and watching their children play in filthy sites.

The waste included everything from builders’ rubble, baby nappies and household rubbish to dead animals.

Mashamothane residents complained of baby nappies being discarded on the tarred roads while Praktiseer people said the rubbish was thrown into the Tubatse River, which they sometimes used as a source of water.

Mr Lazarus Kwinika of Tubatse Environmental Awareness, who showed his displeasure with the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), highlighted that they had complained to GTM on several occasions but nothing had been done to rectify the situation. “We cleaned most of the areas, but after a couple of weeks, it began to stink again.”

Kwinika said they had requested that a “no-dumping” sign should be erected and a big rubbish bin provided, but there was no response. For this article and more grab a copy of the Steelburger/Lydenburg News edition tomorrow.
