An increase in poachings during full moon

Anti-poaching efforts strenuous in the Greater Kruger National Park

SKUKUZA – A Kruger National Park (KNP) tourist reported on Sunday, July 5, that a rhino that had allegedly been poached could be seen next to the road. The rhino was still alive.
The incident took place next to the H-7, the main road between Orpen Gate and Satara Rest Camp.
A photo and information can be found on Wildafricalive.com and was shared by Mr Darryl Milner on the SANParks Facebook group.

The media specialist for SANParks, Mr Isaac Phaahla, told Lowvelder that the wounded animal was reported with horns intact in the Satara section.
“Rangers and veterinary services in KNP attended to the animal. It was darted and found to have gunshot wounds. The vet took a decision that the animal could not recover, even with treatment, and it was then euthanized. The horns were recovered by the rangers and the incident reported as a rhino-poaching incident,” said Phaahla.
The photo of the rhino under discussion was initially shared by Mr James Thomas on Wildafricalive.com
Mr Conraad Geza de Rosner, a member of Sabi Sand Game Reserve’s anti-poaching unit, said they had huge successes in stopping poachers before they could shoot animals.

“Poaching is very busy at the moment, because of the dry conditions and the veld being very open. We have picked up a number of photos of poachers wanting to come through the fence,” de Rosner added.
