Blind man dreams big

“I don’t want to sit home and wait for my pension day. I want to do something productive with my life, I want to study," he told Steelburger/Lydenburg News.

DRIEKOP – He is blind and dreams of becoming the public-relations officer of a big company, but Peter Sekome cannot afford the tuition fees at Damelin College.

The 42-year-old Sekome of Ga-Kgwete Village pleads with local business owners to help him realise his dreams.

“I don’t want to sit home and wait for my pension day. I want to do something productive with my life, I want to study,” he told Steelburger/Lydenburg News.

Sekome says he was not born completely blind. “When I was younger I had some vision, but the situation worsened as I grew older. Now I cannot see anything.”

He is not married and has no children, and told the paper that there was no one to take care of him.

“I believe I will learn a lot of things if I study at Damelin. I will also have the opportunity to socialise with other blind people.”

He pleads with the community and businesses to donate a laptop and a Perkins Brailler machine to help study. “I am willing to pay back the money for the equipment as soon as I am employed,” he promises.

Those who wish to help Sekome achieve his dream, can contact him on 071-276-3136.
