“These goals must be reached by 2015”, the UN said in 2000

The Millennium Declaration was signed 14 years ago and is just under 12 months away from the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals.

The United Nations (UN) gathered in New York in 2000. The principles and values that mattered to world leaders at the beginning of the new millennium were put into writing.  The Millennium Declaration was born – a commitment to making the world a better place.

This declaration has a deadline of December 2015 when their eight goals must be achieved.  We are 12 months away from this deadline.

Let’s recap on the eight Millenium Development Goals:

  1. Peace, security and disarmament.
  2. Development and a reduction in poverty.
  3. Protecting the environment.
  4. Human rights.
  5. Democracy and good governance.
  6. Protection for people and the groups who are particularly vulnerable.
  7. Consideration for the special needs of Africa.
  8. Strengthening the UN

With only a year to go, it will be interesting to see the UN’s feedback at the end of 2015.
