The jolly season is upon us!

December is a month filled with festivities.  Here are five events that are celebrated in South Africa and all over the world.  Be sure to mark them off on your calender – any reason for a celebration.

  1. International Hug Day is celebrated on December 4. Perform this selfless act just to make somebody else feel better.
  2. Human Rights Day is celebrated all around the world on December 10. The United Nation’s General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.  Commemorate this monumental moment by keeping this in mind on the 10th.
  3. Christmas Eve is the evening or entire day proceeding Christmas Day, the widely celebrated annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It occurs on December 24 in the Western Christian Church and is considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christiandom and the Western world.  In South Africa, we celebrate the public holiday on the 25th.
  4. South Africans celebrate the Day of Goodwill on December 26 each year. This day was initially created in honour of the time when people in the UK spent their day ‘boxing up’ their Christmas gifts.  The day was renamed by our government in 1994 and is now spent practicing goodwill unto others and sharing in the South African summer festivities.
  5. New Year’s Evening! Bring the champagne and celebrate the end of 2014 and the start of a brand new year.  This is a greatly celebrated event all over the world.
