Streets turn blue in support of cancer awareness

LYDENBURG – In support of the prostate cancer awareness walk this week, trees along Voortrekker and Viljoen streets were wrapped in blue material two weeks ago.

Chairman of the CANSA Lydenburg branch, Ms Isobel Janse van Rensburg, says participants will gather outside Spar-O-Rama on November 29 for the walk. From there they will proceed to the Heads Shopping Centre. The entrance fee is

R150 per person which includes a light meal and blue golf shirt.

Those who opt to wear their own blue T-shirt will only pay R50 for the meal. The aim of the project is to reach out to those affected by prostate cancer and to raise funds to fight it.

The national project of covering trees started in 2012 by Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld and breast-cancer survivor, Adri van Niewenhuizen together with Dr Pam Ker.

In October trees in the town were covered in pink fabric in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Janse van Rensburg said she would like to advise community members to pay the entrance fee by Friday so they could make suitable preparations for the day and bookings for lunch. Those interested can call Van Rensburg on 084-329-8737.

Prostate cancer, also known as carcinoma of the prostate, is the development of cancer in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system.
