Former Standard Bank employee guilty of theft and fraud

Woman admitted to stealing more than R2.7 million from her employer in the Mbombela Regional Court on Friday.

MBOMBELA – A former Standard Bank employee was found guilty of stealing more than R2,7 million on Friday in the Nelspruit Regional Court. She was also found guilty of fraud.

Marilize Stins was previously employed as a team leader at Standard Bank’s processing department in Rocky’s Drift. Her job description entailed transferring money between cash accounts and the accounts they were destined for upon instruction.
Stins’ affidavit that accompanied her plea of guilty, relayed the details of her deviation from her job description. She transferred the money into the bank accounts of her son, her husband, her mother and herself.

One of Standard bank’s forensic auditors confronted Stins with these allegations in March 2010 and she admitted to stealing the bank’s money. A disciplinary hearing was held and she was dismissed from her position. She was arrested three days later.

Magistrate Ms Vanessa Joubert found Stins guilty of theft and fraud and a suspended sentence of eight years was passed. In addition hereto, the convicted Stins has to pay an amount of R3 000 to her previous employer for a period of 60 months. She has also been placed under correctional supervision and house arrest for a period of three years and must attend a number of rehabilitative social work programmes which will still be prescribed by the court.
