New route to boost provincial tourism

The aim is to highlight the role played by struggle icons during Apartheid and promote those sites that freedom fighters utilised as their hideouts.

MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) launched the Liberation Heritage Route at the annual tourism Indaba in Durban.

MTPA chairman, Mr Thulani Nzima, said the aim of the route is to attract tourists to the various liberation-heritage destinations.

“As the MTPA we identified the need to launch this route at this year’s Indaba, to create awareness about this route and further promote it to the broader tourism industry. The development of this route was facilitated by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation in partnership with MTPA,” he said.

Nzima also mentioned that there were six towns that were extensively involved in the anti-apartheid liberation struggle, Bethal, Daggakraal, Ermelo, Saul Mkhizeville, Secunda and Volksrust.

“Furthermore, each destination needs to be further developed so as to provide various tourism products and services that will encourage tourists to visit the Liberation Heritage Route in its entirety, and encourage them to remain longer in each destination,” he said.

Detailed digital content highlights each town. This provides detailed information about the route, accommodation, attractions, maps and cities. The information will assist in planning a trip when visiting the attractions on this route.
