NASA’s picture of the day

Striking image of a cloud "photobombing" a rare planetary conjunction.

This striking image was captured by Nuno Serrão, who wanted to capture a rare conjunction of Venus and Mars only visible form Earth every few months.

Coupled with a crescent moon, the lining of the planets would have been the focal point of the photo. However, as the sun was setting, an unusual lenticular cloud, with its whispy textures, moved in front of the camera and offered a remarkable sight.

Venus and Mars are two star-like figures on the left of the cloud, toward the bottom of the frame, with Venus being the brighter ‘star’.
