WATCH: Ramblers first hike of the year

Kaapsehoop was the first hiking event of the year.

As a newbie in the Ramblers Hiking club, I experienced my first outing in Kaapsehoop.

A new decade brings new goals, new people and new records.

The first hike of the year made history when more than 60 people took to the Kaapsehoop trail.

After a long week at work, getting up early on a Saturday morning may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but appreciating beautiful views may just be.

This is also a great opportunity to meet new and interesting people.

We headed into the Blue Swallow Reserve up to the trig beacon following the vehicle track, picking up the trail following the edge of the escarpment back towards Kaapsehoop.

We passed Adam’s Calendar and headed towards the lookout tower before returning to the village.

This was moderate to difficult terrain with two escape routes for those who became weary.

The trail was roughly 14 kilometres and took about five hours.

The next hike will be February 1 at Misty Mountain. It will be a moderate eight- to 10-kilometre route.
