Elephants stampede in KNP

These Elephant were actually chasing off a Lion pride which got to close (not visible in the video), when the open safari vehicle (OSV) full with tourists got in the middle of the action.

“We went on the game drive and that herd of elephants had ran across the dirt road behind us, they were very active as the Safari Guide was saying, he thinks they were stampeding to scare some lions away from the area, there were a lot of baby elephants in the group.

So we turned the car around and drove quickly around them and to meet them before they crossed the road on the other side, so we then saw them coming and they began to cross the road, and then one elephant got really aggressive and decided to come back a few times, we didn’t realize at the time we had parked the car in the middle of the pack, they hadn’t all crossed the road and there were more baby elephants coming, so looking back i think thats why he kept trying to scare us out of the way.

In the video more elephants come and then we were surrounded by angry elephants, it was truly terrifying, we had no idea what to do, the guide was telling us to be calm, i wasn’t sure if i had to run and hide, which probably is the last thing you should do.

And then you can see in the video eventually we start the car and slowly drive away. After we were safe it was an amazing experience, but in that moment i was so frightened, and the energy and sound of those giant elephants screaming at us is intense. I’ll never forget it!!”
