Napalma never fails to impress the crowd

It's like the crowd did not even notice that only three of the band's original four performed.

MBOMBELA – Those lucky enough to be at Jock Pub & Grill on Friday night can testify to the revelry caused by a Mozambican band who is no stranger to the Lowveld.

As always, Napalma attracted an unusually large crowd. Three of the quartet, originally from Brazil but who now resides in Mozambique, had every person on the dance floor bouncing to their unique electro beats. Their fourth member and saxophonist Ben Amato was not present.

It is hard to pin their music down to one genre. In fact, on their website they only classify their music as “electro percussive beats”. In simpler terms, it is a blend of deep-base trance, rock and roll and reggae. The outcome is a compelling and almost primal beat with the undeniable ability to lure even the most clumsy clodhopper to the dance floor.

Lead singer, Ivo Maia entertained the masses by banging on a base drum and a hi hat while serenading them in Portuguese.

The hi hat produced a fitting click in combination with the base. Rafael Jabah generated the rock ‘n roll with his Ibanez electric guitar while Cid Travaglia manned the African djembe.
