Owners outraged because ‘loved’ pets were confiscated and euthanised

The owners of seven dogs, cats and an African grey parrot are unhappy because staff of the Nelspruit SPCA removed and euthanised animals from their property.

According to local SPCA inspector Ms Marcelle Hoffmann they were alerted by concerned members of the public and the animals were removed after leaving several warnings at the property in Nelspruit, requesting veterinary care for dogs with suspected mange.

The owner claims that she loved her animals, kept them well and was busy treating them back to good health. “I supplied them with enough food and clean blankets every day, but being old dogs (15 and eight years, respectively) even the vet warned that the one’s skin condition would take a long time to heal.”

Hoffmann however insists that they were reasonable and gave enough time to get veterinary care for these animals. “Refusing care is not an option, as the animals suffer while people make excuses,” she says.

She claims that SPCA staff members intervened after proper inspections, obtained a warrant and were assisted by the SAPS to ensure a proper inspection. Seven dogs, two cats and an African Grey were removed and taken to a vet for immediate care.

Hoffmann says three of the animals were emergency euthanised by a vet due to their poor condition. One cat had upper respiratory infection (snuffels), an infected bite wound on its leg, fleas and dental issues. “The respiratory infection could have been treated in the early stages but it was allowed to progress.”

Two of the dogs allegedly never received veterinary care. “They suffered massive hair loss, thickened skin and external parasites suggest that their health and comfort were never priority.

The nails of one smaller dog were grown into the soft cushions of its paws and it was blind. Another also had a massive lump in the neck which, when opened by the vet, oozed a brown liquid.

Hoffmann warns: “Owning any animal is a privilege. They have the right to a beautiful and healthy life. The Nelspruit SPCA staff and management team are dedicated to ensure we serve our community and prevent any animal suffering.”
