Barberton students affected as protests flare up

Hoërskool Barberton parents were told to personally fetch their children from school as protest action by taxi drivers flared up today.

The protests are the consequence of the murder of a taxi owner in February.

Hoërskool Barberton’s headmaster, Pieter Ferreira, urged parents to collect their children from school.

“Due to the ongoing taxi strike, we request parents to come and fetch learners at school today. We don’t want learners in the street for their own safety,” said Ferreira in a video posted to the school’s Facebook page.

“We’ll keep them inside the premises until you can come and collect them.”

The Barberton Police Station confirmed the riots were in connection with the taxi owner’s death. They were unsure how long these would continue. Some trucks were used to block roads.

The grade 12 academic parent evening scheduled for tonight has been postponed until further notice.

This is a developing story.
