SPONSORED | Roots Butchery Middelplaas: Putting smiles on children’s faces

Roots Butchery recently donated groceries to a community centre in Nkomazi through their 500 Smiles campaign.

Roots Butchery’s 500 Smiles campaign continues to make a difference in the lives of children around Nkomazi.

The Phumungasabi Multipurpose Centre is one of the beneficiaries, and the children there going to bed on full stomachs. With over 60 children between seven and 18 years, the centre receives groceries from Roots Butchery in Middelplaas, ranging from mealie meal and veggies to meat.

Some meals that are served to the children at Phumungasabi.

“We approached the butchery in June 2023 and they have been supporting us to date. The children come from disadvantaged backgrounds and some of them are migrants and orphans. It’s heartwarming for them to be able to receive two meals per day from Monday to Friday. Roots Butchery has been ensuring that they are fed with nutritious food since last year,” said the centre manager, Bongekile Ntuli.

The children at Phumungasabi Multipurpose Centre enjoy their meal.

Ntuli said Roots Butchery came in like a saviour in the darkest hour of need. “We had tried getting sponsorship before from bigger companies and government departments. When Roots Butchery came to our rescue, it felt like such a relief, a huge weight was lifted off our shoulders. We are eternally grateful,” she added.

Roots Butchery manager Daniel Ponte said the sponsorship is continuous. “We are all about putting smiles on the faces of children and this is one way of doing it. Our community involvement is broader than what might be seen out there. Some of the things we give back to the community should rather stay undocumented for the public eye. The 500 Smiles campaign is our way of showing gratitude to the community and assuring them that we are one. We will still continue to put even more smiles on children’s faces and get involved in community projects in whatever way possible,” said Ponte.
