UPDATE | Nine lions on the loose at Ngwenya Lodge to be captured after dusk

The team is waiting for the lions to become active after dusk so they can make their way to the bait and be darted.

Efforts to get nine lions that are roaming in Ngwenya Lodge back into the Kruger National Park (KNP) are still underway. A team of veterinary doctors, rangers of SANParks and officials of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) are still on site at Ngwenya Lodge.

The dedicated team attempted different methods to gather the lions so they could be darted. This included using a carcass as bait and the SANParks helicopter.

“Our team was not able to drive through the bush because it is very thick. We are waiting for traffic to subside and the sun to go down so that the animals are active and make their way to the bait. The work will be done as soon as the lions come out and are able to be darted. We will be able to give a proper update in the morning,” said SANParks’s spokesperson, Ike Phaahla.

The pride of lions was reported to be on the loose on Wednesday morning, September 11, on a Facebook post by SANParks.

This is a developing story and Lowvelder will provide more details as they become available.
